The Polished Beauty Routine

A simple approach to feeling put together that starts long before makeup.

When we think about looking polished, makeup isn't actually the first thing that comes to mind.

The foundation is everything underneath it.

Skin that's cared for.

Hair that's healthy and looked after.

Clean, well-kept nails.

The general habits that help you feel good before you've applied a single product.

We love makeup. But we want it to feel like something we get to use rather than something we need before we're comfortable leaving the house.

For everyday beauty, we prefer enhancement over transformation.

And most days, it really doesn't take much.

START WITH WHAT YOU'RE ENHANCING

Taking care of your natural beauty will always be our starting point.

A consistent skincare routine matters more to us than a complicated makeup routine.

The same goes for hair.

And nails.

And all of those fairly unglamorous things—sleep, water, movement, eating well—that tend to show up eventually in how we look and feel.

None of it needs to be perfect.

But when the foundation feels good, everything you add afterward becomes easier.

LET SKIN LOOK LIKE SKIN

For an ordinary day, we're not particularly interested in covering everything.

A little concealer where you want it can be enough.

Under the eyes. Around the nose. A blemish that's annoying you.

Blend it into the skin rather than building an entirely new layer over your face.

The goal for us is simple:

Still your skin. Just a little more rested.

CURL YOUR LASHES

This may be the smallest step with the biggest payoff.

Curling the lashes immediately makes the eyes look more open and awake, even if mascara never follows.

It's one of those things that takes almost no time but somehow makes us feel significantly more put together.

If we're leaving the house and doing very little else, this is still likely happening.

ADD MASCARA

For everyday makeup, we want mascara to define the lashes rather than take over the entire face.

Length.

Separation.

A little darkness around the eyes.

That's enough.

If we're going somewhere and want drama, that's a different story.

Everyday beauty doesn't have to do the job of evening beauty.

ADD SOME COLOR BACK

A little blush changes everything.

It's one of the reasons it has earned such a permanent place in our routine.

We like blush that blends into the skin rather than sitting obviously on top of it—something that looks more like natural color returning to the face.

The exact shade will be personal.

The effect we're after is the same:

awake, healthy and alive.

DON'T FORGET YOUR HAIR

There are days when great hair does more for us than makeup ever could.

It doesn't necessarily need to mean a full blowout.

Maybe the hair is curled.

Maybe it's smooth and straight.

Maybe it's pulled back into a clean bun or ponytail.

The important thing is that it feels done on purpose.

When the hair looks considered, the rest of the look tends to follow.

KEEP NAILS WELL KEPT

This is one of those small details we notice.

Your nails don't need nail art, extensions or even polish to look polished.

Clean.

Filed.

Cared for.

That's enough.

In fact, we'd take beautifully maintained bare nails over chipped polish every time.

There's plenty of room to have fun with nails when the mood strikes, but upkeep will always matter more to us than the trend.

FIND YOUR SIGNATURE FRAGRANCE

We love the idea of a signature scent.

Some of the most elegant women we know have a fragrance we immediately associate with them.

There's something wonderfully old-school about that.

Not a shelf of perfume chosen because each bottle was trending, but a scent—or perhaps a small handful—that feels so naturally yours that other people begin to recognize it too.

Fragrance is invisible, but it can become one of the most memorable things about someone.

We think that's rather beautiful.

AND SOMETIMES, DO THE MOST

Natural and polished is our everyday preference.

It isn't a rule.

There are nights when we want the makeup.

The hair.

The lashes.

The lip.

The entire thing.

And we fully support it.

Beauty is supposed to be enjoyable.

Having a signature everyday look doesn't mean you're required to wear it every day.

Sometimes getting completely done up is simply fun.

That's reason enough.

OUR REAL-WORLD FIVE-MINUTE VERSION

When we want to leave the house feeling pulled together without making an event out of getting ready, the formula is very simple:

Curl the lashes.

Mascara.

A little concealer where needed.

Blush.

Hair done or intentionally pulled back.

That's it.

No seventeen-step routine.

No requirement that the finished result look as though we spent an hour getting there.

Just enough to make us feel like ourselves—only slightly more polished.

THE CET TAKEAWAY

For us, polished beauty starts with taking care of yourself rather than covering yourself.

Care for the skin.

Take care of the hair.

Keep the nails neat.

Then use makeup to add whatever you want that day.

Sometimes that's concealer, blush and mascara.

Sometimes it's everything in the makeup bag.

The important part is that beauty feels like an expression of confidence—not a prerequisite for it.
