Getting dressed comes naturally to some women. For others, figuring out personal style can feel surprisingly complicated.
If you're not quite sure where to start, we think the classics are a very good place.
Not because there's a universal checklist every woman needs to follow, but because classic pieces give you a foundation. They make it easier to understand what silhouettes you like, what proportions make you feel your best and which pieces you find yourself reaching for again and again.
From there, you edit.
Add the things that feel like you. Leave behind the things that don't. Try the trend you've been thinking about. Wear the unexpected shoes.
The goal isn't to build the perfect wardrobe according to someone else's rules.
It's to refine your own style until getting dressed feels intuitive.
These are the ten pieces we'd start with.
01. THE PERFECT WHITE SHIRT

There is a reason the white shirt appears on almost every wardrobe list.
It works.
Crisp but not stiff. Relaxed without looking sloppy. Worn tucked into trousers, open over a swimsuit, underneath a sweater or simply with great denim, it adapts remarkably well.
We prefer beautiful cotton, minimal detailing and a fit that has enough ease to feel effortless.
The goal isn't finding the most interesting white shirt.
It's finding the one you reach for constantly.
02. STRAIGHT-LEG DENIM

Denim trends will continue changing. Good jeans will continue being good jeans.
A classic straight-leg pair in a medium or dark wash gives you somewhere reliable to start.
Sweater and ballet flats.
White T-shirt and blazer.
Button-down and loafers.
The exact rise and cut will depend on your proportions, but we're looking for denim that makes you feel good the moment you put it on.
That's the pair worth keeping.
03. A TAILORED BLAZER

If an outfit feels unfinished, our instinct is almost always to add a layer.
A blazer is particularly good at this.
It gives structure to a white T-shirt and jeans, works beautifully over a dress and can make very simple pieces feel immediately pulled together.
Black and navy are obvious classics, while camel, cream and chocolate can be just as useful depending on the rest of your wardrobe.
If blazers aren't your thing, a beautiful cardigan or classic leather jacket can serve the same purpose.
The point is having that finishing layer you know you can reach for.
04. THE LITTLE BLACK DRESS

It doesn't actually have to be little.
And if we're being technical, it doesn't necessarily have to be black.
What we want is the dress.
The one you can pull out when the invitation says dinner, cocktail, wedding or something vaguely described as “dressy” and you don't have time to rethink your entire wardrobe.
Choose a silhouette that flatters you and makes you feel confident.
Then keep it ready.
05. TAILORED TROUSERS

A beautifully fitting pair of trousers can make an incredibly simple outfit look considered.
Black, navy, cream, camel and charcoal are all useful starting points.
But the important part is the fit.
Waist placement. Length. Proportion.
And we're very much in favor of tailoring.
A relatively inexpensive pair of trousers that has been altered beautifully can look far better than a much more expensive pair that doesn't quite fit.
06. CASHMERE OR A BEAUTIFUL FINE KNIT

Good knitwear is one of those things we return to constantly.
A simple sweater in cream, camel, navy, chocolate or charcoal works with denim, trousers and skirts, layers over dresses and looks particularly good draped over the shoulders when an outfit needs one more thing.
This is also somewhere we'd prioritize quality.
The knit should feel beautiful, hold its shape and be something you genuinely want to wear year after year.
07. A TIMELESS HANDBAG

Despite what an endless stream of unboxing videos might suggest, you don't need a new handbag every season.
A few excellent bags that work with your actual life will take you much further.
We love a structured leather bag in black, chocolate, cognac or another neutral that complements the rest of the wardrobe.
The best ones don't need to announce what they cost.
They simply make the outfit better.
08. LOAFERS OR BALLET FLATS

A good flat is indispensable.
Loafers bring a little structure. Ballet flats soften an outfit.
Both work particularly well because they can make everyday clothes feel styled without requiring a heel.
We look for classic shapes, good proportions and something we're happy to reach for repeatedly.
The right shoe should finish the outfit rather than fight with it.
09. A BEAUTIFUL COAT

Outerwear does a surprising amount of work.
Throw a well-cut coat over denim and a sweater and suddenly the entire outfit feels considered.
We love a classic trench and a beautifully tailored wool coat. Camel, black, navy, charcoal and cream are particularly easy to return to year after year.
This is one of the categories where we're willing to invest a little more.
A beautiful coat can stay in your wardrobe for years, and because it's often the first thing anyone sees, it's worth finding one you genuinely love.
10. SOMETHING THAT FEELS LIKE YOU
This may actually be the most important piece on the list.
Once the classics are there, personal style comes from what you do with them.
Maybe it's a silk scarf.
A pair of earrings people always ask about.
A vintage jacket.
A red lip.
A spectacular shoe.
A color you wear constantly.
Those are the things that eventually make someone look at an outfit and think:
That's so her.
We love trends when they're good.
Timeless style doesn't mean pretending fashion stops changing. If something is having a moment and we genuinely love it, we're happy to make room for it.
The distinction is simple:
A trend should fit into your style—not replace it.
THE CET TAKEAWAY
Classics are the foundation.
They're where we'd start when getting dressed doesn't quite feel intuitive yet.
But eventually, the checklist should disappear.
Keep what works.
Tailor what almost works.
Add the pieces that make you feel confident and beautiful.
And pay attention to what you naturally reach for.
Personal style should eventually become personal.
