How to Make Your Home Feel More Luxurious

The homes we love most aren't necessarily expensive. They feel peaceful.

When we think about a beautiful home, the first word that comes to mind isn't luxury.

It's peace.

We want to walk through the door and immediately feel like we can exhale.

For us, that means clean spaces, very little clutter, warm lighting and rooms that actually feel comfortable enough to live in.

We're not particularly drawn to homes that are so modern they feel cold, or rooms that look beautiful in a photograph but make you afraid to put a glass on the coffee table.

THE CET home is different.

Warm. Inviting. Classic. Comfortable.

The kind of place that still feels like home ten years from now.

And we don't think creating that feeling necessarily requires spending a fortune.

START WITH LESS CLUTTER

This is probably the biggest one for us.

When our homes feel cluttered, our minds feel cluttered.

A completely empty house isn't the goal. We want books and photographs and beautiful objects and all of the things that make a home feel personal.

But we also want somewhere to put our coffee down.

Clear the surfaces that have slowly become storage.

Put away the things you aren't using.

Get rid of the objects you've stopped noticing but continue moving around every time you clean.

Then look at the room again.

Sometimes the biggest improvement is simply giving everything a little more room to breathe.

LIGHTING CHANGES EVERYTHING

If there is one thing we feel strongly about at home, it's lighting.

At night, we want it warm and dim.

Lamps on. Overhead lights off whenever possible.

A little pool of light next to the sofa or beside the bed feels infinitely more inviting to us than bright white light flooding an entire room.

During the day, let natural light in.

At night, soften everything.

It may be one of the least expensive ways to completely change how a room feels.

CHOOSE WARMTH OVER PERFECTION

We don't want THE CET home to feel cold or aggressively modern.

We want linen. Wood. Stone. Wool. A comfortable sofa. Books you've actually read. A table people aren't afraid to eat at.

Rooms should look better with people in them.

That's an important distinction.

The goal isn't creating a showroom.

It's creating a home.

BUY FOR THE HOME YOU'LL STILL LOVE LATER

Trends move incredibly quickly now, including interiors.

One year everything is stark white. Then everything is beige. Then suddenly everyone needs a specific chair.

We would rather build a home slowly around things that have been beautiful for a very long time.

Natural materials.

Classic shapes.

Good proportions.

Pieces with some character.

That doesn't mean nothing can be modern or interesting. It just means we don't want to replace an entire living room every five years because the internet decided it was dated.

Timeless doesn't mean boring. It means lasting.

PAY ATTENTION TO SCALE

Sometimes a room doesn't need more decoration.

It needs the right proportions.

A rug that's large enough.

Curtains hung a little higher.

One substantial lamp instead of three tiny accessories.

A piece of art that actually relates to the wall it's hanging on.

Before buying another decorative object, look at the room from across it.

Sometimes the answer is a larger rug, a lower lamp or simply moving the furniture you already own.

MAKE ORDINARY THINGS FEEL SPECIAL

Use the glasses you save for guests.

Keep fresh branches or flowers in a simple vase when you can.

Put the fruit in the bowl you love instead of leaving it in the bag.

Make the bed.

Fold the towels.

Light the candle even when nobody is coming over.

We think part of what makes a home feel luxurious is deciding that your everyday life is worthy of the nice things too.

TAKE CARE OF WHAT YOU ALREADY OWN

Clean the sofa.

Polish the table.

Wash the cushion covers.

Fix the drawer that has been annoying you for six months.

Replace the burnt-out lightbulb.

Luxury isn't always something new.

Sometimes it's simply a home where the things you already own are cared for.

THE CET TAKEAWAY

For us, the ultimate luxury at home is peace.

A clean space.

Warm lighting.

Beautiful things that don't feel too precious to use.

Rooms that invite you to sit down and stay awhile.

You don't need your home to look brand new.

You want it to feel like somewhere you'll still love coming home to years from now.
